This is what it looks like once it is mixed. This is just a mixture of sand and clay to set the hearth bricks with. There is no cement in this mortar since we may need to repair or replace a hearth brick in the future. A normal cement based mortar would make this a very difficult task. This mortar is mainly to give us a flexible bed to establish the hearth on.
